I am trying to imagine Mary and her husband Joseph, a very young couple watching the birth of the Savior being born. As they held him tight, keeping him warm, did they realize just who Jesus was?
As Jesus lay in His mother’s arms, angels appeared to shepherds in their fields. At this time shepherds were the down and out, they were sometimes known as thieves, as men that would be pulled out of the TSA line and rechecked one more time. These men were not respected by society, and in many cases despised. Yet, it is these types of men, that the angels appear to first. Scripture tells us that the shepherds quickly went to see the baby savior. Upon seeing baby Jesus they worshiped, they praised God for all they had seen. These shepherds were to be the first heralds for Jesus. These men of ill repute became the first evangelists for Christ. After seeing Jesus they went and told many the news of what they had seen.
This is great news, this is a warm blanket for our soul, because you and I are shepherds, that through Christ, are rescued and redeemed. Praise God for sending Jesus to die, to save, to bring purpose to our lives, to call us all to be heralds of the savior! For it was when we were in the midst of our sin that Christ died for us.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners,
Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
